jet-whistles

Sound-Space-Intervention, 8’17” – ∞

The basis for this Sound-Space-Intervention is a playing mode for transverse flute in contemporary classical music. An air current blown through the flute is breathing into the space. So called ‘jet-whistles’ are circulating in glissandi, and are ruptured by the sharp staccato-rhythms of the moving claps as well as hardly noticeable everyday noise.
In the multiple-channel-installation, the sound material is minimally shifted in every loop, thereby consistently creating different states. In doing so, the physique of the space articulates itself, starts to pulse, opens up and closes, is breathing in and out.
Location means an essential feature to a sound process constantly alternating, apart from other acoustic parameters. The exibition space stand at the core of the concept, transforming it into an instrument, so people feel like staying inside a flute. A fresh breeze is blowing through this ‚pipe organ‘ that turns into a walkable sound-sculpture breathing in and out, in and out …
A listening room with an ever changing sound netting not only dissolving actual limitations of space but also creating new virtual rooms.
In collaboration with Eva Furrer (flutist, Klangforum Wien)

After graduating from the Higher Technical College of Fine Arts in Graz (focus on architecture and painting), I studied Intermedia Art with Sound-Art Pioneer Bernhard Leitner at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (graduation with distinction) and History of Art at the University of Vienna, Austria.
My work focuses on the engagement with interactions, frictions and spaces between different media types (sound, sculpture/object, light, video, photography and architecture). Contextualizing the sensory perception of space, time and location as well as the examination of cognitive processes and technical errors are central themes that I realize in my space installations, sculptures, interventions and performances. Space thereby turns into a place that changes with the recipient’s position, allowing for a situational and continuously changing perception. How the space is perceived is nevertheless deliberately limited to a certain field, through which cognition is led and choice is channeled. The exploration of and experiments with architectural, virtual or even social spaces are fundamental. – hansjuergenpoetz.com
